WHY IS IT NECESSARY TO HAVE REGULAR DENTAL CLEANINGS AND CHECK-UPS IF I HAVE NO PAIN?
By performing regular dental check-ups and cleanings, we can help you prevent many larger (and painful) problems, thus saving you money in the long run. The longer treatment is postponed, the worse the problem will become. Regular cleanings and check-ups will also help to improve and maintain your overall health. Cancer screenings of the mouth are also an important part of your regular visits to our office.
HOW OFTEN SHOULD I GET MY TEETH CLEANED PROFESSIONALLY?
We evaluate each patient on an individual basis and recommend the best maintenance plan to improve and maintain your oral health; however, if it has been a year or more since your last dental cleaning, then you are most likely overdue and we recommend you make an appointment. We would love to see you.
WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF HAVING A FLUORIDE TREATMENT?
Fluoride treatments, along with daily homecare, help to strengthen your enamel and decrease dental decay and sensitivity. We recommend fluoride treatment as a good preventative measure on an individual basis.
I HAVE SENSITIVE TEETH, WHAT SHOULD I DO?
The first step would be to come in for a teeth cleaning and check-up to determine the cause of the sensitivity. Sensitivity may be a sign of shrinking gums, which exposes the root surfaces and makes your teeth sensitive to cold, hot and sweet foods. People who grind their teeth can also have sensitive teeth. Depending on the cause, we will recommend a treatment that is best suited to you.
WHY DO I NEED TO FLOSS IF I BRUSH MY TEETH ON A REGULAR BASIS?
Even after brushing, there are surfaces of your teeth which remain untouched. Therefore, if you don’t floss on a regular basis, you could be putting yourself at risk of two major dental issues: gum disease and cavities between your teeth. As a best practice, you should floss at least once a day. Read our blog all about the health benefits of flossing!
WHO DO I NEED TO HAVE X-RAYS TAKEN DURING A CHECKUP?
X-rays or radiographs help the dentist make accurate diagnoses. They help to visualize specific or isolated dental diseases including cavities, bone loss, infection and other pathologies such as cysts.. If this is your first time at our clinic, we may take full x-rays to establish a healthy baseline for your oral health, and if you are a returning patient, we will want to make sure your health remains as optimal as possible without any surprises.
WHY DO I HAVE BAD BREATH?
Also known as halitosis, bad breath can occur from poor dental habits or other common health issues such as cavities or gum disease. Some medical conditions such as diabetes, sinus infections, stomach ailments, liver disease and chronic bronchitis have also been known causes. If you want a cure for your bad breath as it is impacting your personal wellbeing or confidence, please don’t hesitate to speak with your dentist to develop a treatment plan. HOW CAN I STOP MY GUMS FROM BLEEDING WHEN I BRUSH OR FLOSS?
One of the keys to addressing bleeding gums is to practice good oral hygiene. Gums bleed when they become inflamed due to buildup of plaque and/or tartar. Brush your teeth at least twice per day, floss them once a day, and avoid smoking as it is linked to gum disease as it can lower your body’s immune system. An important first step may be to get your teeth professionally cleaned. If your gums bleed on a regular basis, speak with your dentist.
I DON'T HAVE INSURANCE AND CAN'T AFFORD TO PAY OUT OF POCKET TO SEE A DENTIST. WHAT ARE MY OPTIONS?

IS A PROFESSIONAL TEETH WHITENING TREATMENT BETTER THAN OVER THE COUNTER KITS?
There are many over-the-counter whitening kits available at your local drugstore however they are not always the most effective or safest option compared to an in-office treatment monitored by a trained professional. They may cause unnecessary tooth sensitivity, uneven results or gum discolouration. If your teeth are stained or beginning to yellow, we offer teeth whitening services to brighten your smile at our Red Deer dental clinic.
