Developing healthy habits early on
Start School Smiling strives to help children between the ages of four and seven take steps to maintain good oral health. Forming these healthy habits early on is incredibly beneficial because your kids will continue to practise them for the rest of their lives. Furthermore, beginning to care for their oral health from a young age and bringing kids to a family-friendly dentist early on will help prevent issues like cavities and gum disease form developing later on.
Teaching children about oral health
While teaching your kids about the importance of brushing and flossing their teeth is a good thing, it’s also a good idea to teach them the reasons why they should practise good oral hygiene habits. There are a ton of great resources online about oral health that are specifically targeted toward children. Feel free to use these as a guide in explaining to your children the importance of oral health care.
Building dental hygiene routines
One of the best ways to impart good dental health habits on your kids is to lead by example. Children learn a lot through observation, so seeing you brushing and flossing twice a day will teach them to do the same. When you visit the dentist for your own dental examinations, bring your kids along to show them that there’s nothing to be afraid of. Finally, you can help them form healthy dental habits by rewarding them for good behaviour. Something as small as putting a sticker on a calendar for every day they’ve brushed their teeth can really help them in developing healthy routines.
