Start School Smiling: Every Grade 1 Student Receives a FREE Dental Exam
This fall, Parkland Mall Dental Centre is proud to be participating in the provincial Start School Smiling campaign.
Launched by the Alberta Dental Association and College (ADA&C), this campaign allows all students entering Grade One in Alberta to receive a free dental exam, regardless of their family’s health plan. We’re thrilled to have this opportunity to give back to our community and use our expertise to get kids on the right track when it comes to their oral health. Keep reading to learn more about this initiative and why we think it’s so important.
What is the Start School Smiling campaign?
Start School Smiling is based off a successful program once run by the Edmonton and District Dental Society that aimed to give elementary students free dental checkups at the start of the school year. This year, the ADA&C has taken the program to the next level by turning it into a province-wide campaign. It entitles all grade one students in Alberta to receive a free exam, including bitewing X-rays, from participating dental clinics like ours from September 15 to October 31, 2018.
Nearly 200 Alberta dental offices are participating in the campaign by offering free exams and X-rays to qualifying students during the back-to-school season. At Parkland Mall Dental Centre, we’re happy to be taking part and offering these free services at our clinic in Red Deer to kids in Grade One this fall.
Why is it so important that children see a dentist regularly?
One of the reasons why we’re so committed to taking part in this campaign is because we know how vital it is that children visit a dentist regularly as they’re growing up. Frequent checkups allow dentists to monitor the development of children’s baby and adult teeth, provide professional cleanings, administer fluoride treatments (especially important for children) and check for cavities, gum disease and other dental problems. Regular dental visits and X-rays are also important for determining whether a child might someday need braces.
Without proper dental care, kids can develop many serious dental problems, including ones that cause a great deal of pain and have serious health complications. In these cases, their families end up having to pay for costly procedures and treatments, which they may not be able to afford, especially if they don’t have dental insurance.
