How to Care For Your Dental Bridge

Properly caring for a dental bridge will help extend its lifespan. Here’s an overview of how to clean and care for your dental bridge to maximize its lifespan and preserve your oral health.

What is a dental bridge?

A dental bridge is a fixed prosthetic used to replace missing teeth. It consists of two crowns that are anchored to natural teeth or dental implants adjacent to the gap (missing tooth) together with an artificial tooth which is fused to those two crowns.

In addition to restoring your smile, a dental bridge helps protect your remaining teeth and prevents them from shifting. It can also improve your ability to chew and speak. To find out if you’re a candidate for dental bridges, schedule a consultation with your dentist.

Care and cleaning

One of the top threats to your dental bridge is tooth decay. If a natural tooth on either side of the fixture weakens, your bridge can loosen or even fall off. Here are a few tips you should follow to keep your teeth healthy.

  • Brush your natural teeth and your dental bridge twice a day using a soft-bristled brush and fluoride toothpaste

  • Floss between your natural teeth and beneath your artificial teeth once a day using a floss threader

  • Visit your dentist twice a year for a professional cleaning and exam

A healthy lifestyle will also help keep your teeth in good condition. This includes eating nutrient-rich fruits and vegetables, drinking plenty of water and reducing sugary and acidic foods. You should also avoid chewing or smoking tobacco products, which are bad for your oral health.

Repairs and replacement

A dental bridge may need to be repaired if its porcelain coating chips or cracks. If there’s extensive damage, however, it’ll need to be replaced. More commonly, a bridge will fail due to an issue with one of the teeth to which it is anchored. This includes tooth decay, infection or fracturing. Regular checkups will allow your dentist to identify problems early on and either prevent or mitigate damage.
