4 Reasons it May be Time to Remove Your Tooth
Sometimes, knowing whether or not you need a tooth extraction can be hard to determine. While there are several ways your dentist can save your natural teeth, ultimately, an extraction may be the best option to preserve health of your mouth. Here are a few common signs you should visit your dentist to remove a problematic tooth:
- Infection or Decay: Poor oral hygiene, heavy smoking, and even injuries are all factors that can lead to a severe tooth infection. Furthermore, experiencing pain, sensitivity, or noticing a significant change in your tooth’s colour, are a few signs of tooth decay. In this case, extraction may be considered if the infection is beyond the scope of root canal treatment, in order to prevent the spread of infection
- Severe Gum Disease: If you refrain from caring for your teeth with daily brushing and flossing, bacteria can enter the space between your teeth and gum lines and wreak havoc on your oral health. The initial stage of gum disease, known as gingivitis, is often indicated by red, swollen, and bleeding gums. In some cases, gingivitis can be controlled with good brushing and flossing habits and regular visits to your dentist. However, in more advance cases, bone loss (periodontal disease) can occur. If this disease is left untreated, bone and connective tissue will begin to deteriorate your teeth become loose and an extraction may be required.
- Impacted Wisdom Teeth: One of the more common oral surgery procedures is wisdom tooth extraction. Between the ages of 17-25, wisdom teeth will typically emerge from the back of your mouth. In some cases, people can continue to live with their wisdom teeth with no impact on their overall oral health. For others, wisdom teeth may erupt crookedly, leaving them with very little room to grow inside your mouth. Consequently, these teeth will be removed to avoid overcrowding and/or damage to your permanent teeth.
- Accident Related Trauma: If you need dental attention due to an accident, your dentist should always do everything they can to save your teeth. Some of these options include crowns, dental bonding, and more. In certain instances where your teeth are severely broken or chipped, a tooth extraction may be necessary.
